So if you created a big bad-ass plate-wielding character and are wondering what professions to learn – blacksmithing is an excellent choice! Not only will you be able to create some insanely good gear for yourself, but also have a nice source of income. You will be able to craft more than decent pre-raid gear. In the later phases of the expansion (Ulduar, ToC, ICC), you will be able to learn new powerful recipes and sell those as well. Furthermore, you will be able to craft very sought consumables like Titanium Weapon Chain and Eternal Belt Buckle. Our WotLK blacksmithing guide will help you reach max skill level in no time.
One of the biggest advantages of blacksmithing is that it covers a wide variety of gear. Regardless if you are playing a tank, a DPS, or a healer – you will find something for yourself. Another perk that blacksmiths have is that they can add an additional socket to their gloves and bracers: Socket Bracer, Socket Gloves. If you put 2 epic gems in those sockets, you will get a stat bonus of +40 strength, +60 stamina, +46 spell power, or any other combination of stats/gems you put there.
If you have mining, you can farm all the total mats needed yourself. But don’t sweat if you don’t, you should be able to find them on the auction house easily.

40x Rough Sharpening Stone – 40x Rough Stone (This recipe goes yellow at 15, so you might need to make a bit more than 30.) - 30 – 65
45x Rough Grinding Stone – 90x Rough Stone (This recipe goes yellow at 45, so you might need to make a bit more than 35. )
Don’t sell these. You’ll use them in further recipes.
Don’t forget to train Journeyman blacksmithing (75 – 150) once you reach skill level 50.
- 65 – 75
10x Copper Chain Belt – 60 Copper Bar
Journeyman blacksmithing (75 – 150)
- 75 – 87
15x Coarse Grinding Stone – 24x Coarse Stone
This recipe starts at yellow, so you might need to make a bit more than 12. This recipe goes green at 87, that’s why we stop there. However, if you have a lot of Coarse Stone you can continue doing it till 90.
Also, don’t sell these. You’ll use them in further recipes.
- 87 – 100
13x Runed Copper Belt – 130x Copper Bar - 100 – 105
5x Silver Rod – 5x Silver Bar, 10x Rough Grinding Stone - 105 – 125
20x Rough Bronze Leggings – 120x Bronze Bar
Don’t forget to train Expert Blacksmithing (150 – 225) once you reach skill level 125.
- 125 – 150
70x Heavy Grinding Stone – 210x Heavy Stone
This recipe starts at yellow and goes green at 137, so it’s hard to say how many of them you are going to need to make. Still, Heavy Grinding Stone is by far the best thing to create, especially considering you will be needing them further down the line.
Expert blacksmithing (150 – 225)
- 150 – 155
5x Golden Rod – 5x Gold Bar, 10x Coarse Grinding Stone - 155 – 165

15x Heavy Mithril Gauntlet – 90x Mithril Bar, 60x Mageweave Cloth
Artisan blacksmithing (225 – 300)
- 225 – 235
10x Mithril Scale Bracers – 80x Mithril Bar
You’ll learn this from Plans: Mithril Scale Bracers, a limited supply recipe that Alliance players can buy from Harggan in the Hinterlands, and Horde players from Gharash in Swamp of Sorrows. If you don’t want to wait for the limited supply recipe, you can always check the auction house for it.
- 235 – 250
15x Mithril Coif – 150x Mithril Bar, 90x Mageweave Cloth (6)
or 15x Mithril Spurs – 60x Mithril Bar, 45x Solid Grinding Stone
The Mithril Spurs option is a lot cheaper, but Plans: Mithril Spurs is a random world drop. Try looking for it on the auction house and buy it if it isn’t too expensive.
- 250 – 260
20x Dense Sharpening Stone – 20x Dense Stone (This recipe goes yellow at 255 and goes green at 257, so you will have to make more than 10.)
- 260 – 275
15x Thorium Bracers – 120x Thorium Bar
Plans: Thorium Bracers is also a random world drop. It’s strongly suggested you buy it from the auction house. It’s usually not too expensive.
- 275 – 290
15x Imperial Plate Bracers – 180x Thorium Bar
Plans: Imperial Plate Bracers is the reward for finishing the quest Imperial Plate Bracer given by Derotain Mudsipper in Gadgetzan, Tanaris. To complete the quest, you need to give him 10 Thorium Bars.
- 290 – 300
10x Thorium Boots – 120x Thorium Bar, 80x Rugged Leather
or 10x Thorium Helm – 120x Thorium Bar, 10x Star Ruby
You learn both of these from random world drops. I suggest investing in the one that has cheaper materials – calculate the price of 8x Rugged Leather vs 1x Star Ruby.
